Recently, on twitter I was surprised by a hate tweet. Now typically I do not answer tweets from haters. I mean they are meant to be a distraction. I often find that when one is winning there will be people who scream. They are like a 2 year old throwing a tantrum. This tweet was an attack on my religion.  Before writing this blog I have to admit I felt a bit of apprehension. But that is the trap. This is when I had to ask myself how free are we. REALLY.

I have a friend who is homosexual. And for years during the 90’s he had to hide. He is a phenomenal singer. But the record labels always told him to hide and do not show who you really are because women will not buy your record. So he was trapped and living the life of a lie. Now today he is a Tony winner and the star of a hit tv show. He is also being celebrated for living his life very big. He is married to a man and he no longer has to hide. He is free. I thought about this. When I was attacked last week for practicing Scientology.

There is a woman who has a television show that attacks Scientology. And recently I learned that she was planning to add Jehovahs Witness to her show. Attacking religions is how she makes her money. And there are billboards all over Los Angeles advertising her bigotry.  Would she be allowed today to commit her life to a show attacking the LGBT community? Would she be permitted to film a show attacking the Jewish community? Perhaps 20 years ago the answer to those questions would be yes. But today we are living in an age where the answer should be a resounding NO. Scientology is a mystery to many. So many people are curious about what it is.

Some have no reality so they Google or go to the media. And they don’t find the answers. They have a confusion and sadly in fear and confusion they attack what they don’t know. For many years I did not practice Scientology and those were the years that my life was a mess. I was making stupid decisions and in trouble a lot. I set a bad example for my Church to be very frank. I was also very afraid to admit I was a scientologist. I recall being on the X Factor and someone wrote a scathing article about it. And I felt myself shrink. My agent wouldn’t work with me anymore. I could not get hired for jobs. One person at an agency admitted that she didn’t want to work with me because I was practicing Scientology. I wondered what would she think if I told her I did not want to work with her because she was white. I mean isn’t it all bigotry?

Recently, I worked with an organization in Washington DC called the Faith and Freedom Coalition. And someone wrote an article about me stating that I was pretending to be a Christian.  I grew up in the Christian Church. I know the scriptures. And I still sing at my family’s Church in New York City. When I sing for Christ and minister at the Church there is no faking it. And the attack from people saying I am not honest is immediately quieted by the passion in which I deliver my songs which cannot be denied. So again I am being attacked for being free to practice the religion I choose.

I am being attacked for singing about Jesus Christ. I am being attacked and called a liar for committing my life to share good news and music to move people to feel better and feel happy. I am being attacked for using my life as an example to inspire people. I am being attacked for messing up at one point in my life and not making the right decisions and using the technology of Scientology to grow and get better and now that I have found my purpose to help.. well.. its time to get attacked. Because apparently we are not free.  Of course there is the right of expression and its granted to everyone but there is a difference between expressing oneself and attacking and spreading false ideas about others.

So when does this stop? What will it take for us to realize that this is not ok. It’s wrong. It is a road that leads to unhappiness. The Way to Happiness simply is respecting the religious beliefs of others. There are no Scientologist on this planet harming others. We help. And anyone that helps should not be attacked.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) created by the United Nations is a milestone document in the history of human rights and it states;

Article 18.
Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief, and freedom, either alone or in community with others and in public or private, to manifest his religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship and observance.

As an artist I will do everything to ensure freedom. I will continue to use my life and my voice to bring truth and reality to the public. I will not be defeated by lies and the deceit of others just for their financial gain. Its wrong.  I am not afraid to tell the truth.

I need your help. I need you to look and observe. I need you to stand up for Freedom because it could happen to you.  Be a part of the movement that allows us to be who we choose. Be a part of the movement that celebrates differences. One day you will be glad to receive understanding from someone you don’t know.
